The Dinagyang is a religious and cultural festival in Iloilo City, Philippines held on the fourth Sunday of January, or right after the Sinulog In Cebu and the Ati-Atihan in Aklan. It is held both to honor the Santo Niño and to celebrate the arrival on Panay of Malay settlers and the subsequent selling of the island to them by the Atis.
The Dinagyang Festival has been the Ilonggo way of thanking Viva Sr. Sto. Niño for all the blessings and prosperity He has given them. A tradition that happens every January. It comprises of different tribes competing for one title. It is also composed of street dancing as well as party's here and there. A ceremony which unites Ilonggos to be more religious and Godly.
The implication of this event is that it attracts more foreigners and tourist to visit our town. It gives them the opportunity to experience the said event. It contributes to our economy because of foreigners that pays taxes and other fees.
Its benefit to the Ilonggo is that it creates deeper faith in Sr. Sto. Niño and acknowledgment that he is the source of bountiful blessings we need. Creates better livelihood.
